Cronin, head bookkeeper with the E. Porter Brewing Company, of Joliet, was born in this city December 21, 1866, a son of Robert Emmett and Mary Ellen (Scannell) Cronin, both of whom were natives of Ireland. They came to Joliet about 1863, and for forty-three years the father has been connected with the Illinois state prison. They had two daughters and one son, but Mary E. died in infancy. The surviving daughter is Mae, the wife of J. M. Hurley, a resident of Joliet. John R. Cronin was educated in the schools of this city and in St. Francis Solanaus college, at Quincy, Illinois, from which he was graduated in 1884. He then became assistant bookkeeper for the Ashley Wire Company, engaged in the manufacture of wire at the state prison, and there remained for about a year, when the company built its mill outside of the prison, and Mr. Cronin entered the employ of Ed Talbot, a butcher and grocer. He was with that house for about four years, after which he spent a year as an employe in the mills of the Illinois Steel Company. He next received a desk appointment in the police department under Mayor P. C. Haley, serving in that capacity for two years, when he became clerk at the Duncan hotel. After a brief period, however, he entered the employ of Armour & Company, but in May, 1895, he became connected with the E. Porter Brewing Company and has since been with that concern as head bookeeper. Mr. Cronin has figured prominently in connection with municipal affairs and is recognized as one of the strong and stalwart advocates of democracy, taking an active interest in the work of the party and proving one of the factors in its success here, by reason of his untiring labors in its behalf. In 1902 he was elected city treasurer and served for one term of two years, having been chosen to the office by a majority of nearly one thousand. In 1904 he was a candidate for alderman of the fourth ward on the democratic ticket, which ward has a normal republican majority of about two hundred. There was a tie vote and Mr. Cronin was beaten on the draw. He was campaign manager of the democratic central committee in 1906 and is recognized as one of the influential members of his party. Mr. Cronin is connected with the Elks, the Eagles, the White Cross, the Court of Honor, the Western Catholic Union and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was married November 13, 1899, to Miss Catherine Floyd, of Joliet, and they became the parents of four children, but the two daughters are now deceased. The sons are John R. and Robert James.
