His birth occurred in Ireland, November 4, 1825, his father being Edward Daly, likewise a native of the Emerald Isle, who followed farming and spent his entire life in that country, passing away there many years ago. His wife, Mrs. Lucinda Daly, afterward came to America, where her death occurred in 1891, at the home of her son John. She was a devoted member of the Episcopal church. John Daly acquired his education in the fatherland and remained with his parents until he had reached the age of eighteen years, when, in company with his brother, Edward Daly, he embarked on the sailing vessel, Lord Satan, bound for the American shore, and after a voyage of six weeks on the ocean, reached the harbor of New York. His brother remained in the east, where he learned the cabinet-maker's trade, and there his death occurred. John Daly, however, after spending three or four weeks in New York, decided to come west, and accordingly made his way to Chicago, Illinois, from which city he came to Lockport, Will county, where he was employed by Patrick Fitzpatrick at farm labor. He also worked on the canal which was in course of construction at that time. Times were hard and money scarce and he accepted any employment that would yield him an honest living, working at various pursuits here, at one time being engaged in hauling sand. Noting the possibilities for agricultural development in this section of the state, and wishing to invest in land, he bought property of Charles Boyer. This proved to be a profitable investment, for he prospered in his undertakings and added to his original purchase from time to time until he became the owner of five hundred acres, but he has since given a portion of this to his children. He still retains his home on Section 2, Lockport township. In connection with his son, he operates a dairy, keeping as high as seventy cows for this purpose. He has always led a very busy and useful life, and by his good business management, he has accumulated a competence that now enables him to live retired, leaving the more active work of the farm and dairy to his son. In 1849 occurred the marriage of Mr. Daly and Miss Julia Falker, of Lockport, this state, who was also a native of Ireland, in which country both of her parents passed away, after which she came to the United States, and her death occurred in Will county in 1903. Unto the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Daly were born five children, of whom one is deceased: Thomas, who is engaged in farming pursuits at Fort Scott, Kansas; Dave, who has passed away; Margaret, who is now the wife of Ed McCoy, a resident farmer of Lockport township; Susan, the wife of George Bush, a farmer residing in Wayne, Nebraska; and Edward, who makes his home with his father and operates the homestead farm. Mr. Daly served his township as highway commissioner in which connection he built the rock arch bridges near Lockport. He holds membership with the Episcopal church. Having spent almost six decades in Will county, Mr. Daly has a wide and favorable acquaintance here and is familiar with much of the progress and development that has been made since that early day. He came to this country a poor boy, but has steadily advanced in the business world, until he is now in possession of a comfortable competence which enables him, in the evening of his life, to enjoy a well earned rest.
