He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., August 19, 1849. His railroad experience began in Detroit, where he made his headquarters for a few years. In 1873 he became an agent with the Chicago & Alton Railroad, and two years later was assigned to Dwight, Ill., where he remained for six years. The 1st of January, 1881, found Mr. Douglas in Joliet, as agent of the Chicago & Alton Railroad in this city, a position that he filled until 1885. He was then promoted to be trainmaster. In 1886 he severed his connection with the railroad and became secretary and manager of the Joliet & Chicago Stone Company, with which he continued until 1895, when the business was sold out to the Joliet Limestone Company. With the latter concern he continued as secretary and manager for a short time, and he is still one of the stockholders. In 1897 he became manager of the Globe Stone Company, which employed two hundred men at times. He is also interested in farming. In politics he votes with the Republican party.
