Among the old and honored residents of Jackson township is numbered George Eib, who is now in his ninety-second year. He was born on the 17th of March, 1810, in Clarksburg, Harrison county, West Virginia, and is the third in order of birth in a family of eight children, whose parents were Peter and Madelena (Gilbert) Eib, but is the only one of the number now living. The first ten years of his life were spent in the state of his nativity, and he then accompanied his parents on their removal to Columbus, Ohio. Two years later the family removed to Covington, Indiana, where Mr. Eib spent the following six years, and in 1833 came to Will county, Illinois, with parents, locating on section 7, Jackson township, upon a tract of eighty acres of raw prairie land. His early life was one of hardship and toil, such as pioneer settlers are forced to endure, and he remained with his parents until he attained his majority. On starting out in life for himself he worked by the month for one year, and then he and a brother bought one hundred and sixty acres of land, which they operated in partnership for two years. At the end of that time the brother was married and the property divided, each taking eighty acres as his share. Throughout his active business life our subject continued to engage in agricultural pursuits and as he prospered in his labors he added to his property from time to time and is today the owner of two hundred and sixty-three and a half acres of fine farming land, which is under a high state of cultivation and well improved. Mr. Eib was married May 2, 1844, to Miss Mary Ann Zumwault, of Will county, who was born January 31, 1824, a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Ogle) Zumwault, of Ohio, in whose family were fourteen children, she being the second in order of birth. She has three brothers living: Jacob, a resident of Anderson, California; James, of Williams, that state; and Daniel, also of Anderson. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Eib, six of whom still survive, namely: Peter B. and Mrs. Louisa Ash, both living in California; Mrs. Almeda Hibner, of Gardner, Illinois; Mrs. Mary Orlinda Shelly, of Nebraska; George J. W., who is now operating the old home farm; and Jacob L., a resident of Joliet. Mr. Eib is a self-made man, his success being due entirely to his own efforts, as he had not even the aid of an education, never having attended school a day in his life. He continued to actively engage in agricultural pursuits until 1892, when he erected a small house across the road from his old home and here he and his wife now reside, while his son occupies their former residence and carries on the work of the farm. The prosperity that has come to Mr. Eib is well deserved and now in the evening of life he is enjoying the competence gained by persistent and honest labor. Although in his ninety-second year he is still hale and hearty and is a well informed man on general topics of the day. Politically he has always been a supporter of the democratic party.
