Green is a representative of the agricultural interests of Will county, owning a well improved farm of eighty acres, situated in Lockport township, where he has made his home since 1891. He is a native son of Will county, born in Plainfield township, in 1856. His parents, George W. and Susan (Heath) Green, were natives of the states of New York and Vermont, respectively, their natal year being 1834. The father followed farming throughout his entire business career but he is now living retired in Troy township. His family numbered eight children. William M. Green was reared and educated in Plainfield township, pursuing his studies in the district schools near his father's home. He assisted his father in the operation of the farm until he attained his majority, when he started out to make his own way in the world by engaging in the pursuits to which he had been reared, and this has been his occupation to the present time. He operated rented land in this county for several years, during which time he worked diligently and perserveringly, so that in due course of time he was justified in purchasing property in Ford county, where he made his home for seven years, subsequently disposing of that place and purchasing eighty acres in Lockport township, which constitutes his present place of residence. He has placed his land under a high state of cultivation and annually gathers abundant harvests as the result of the care and labor which he bestows upon the fields. He has a nice home upon his farm and many substantial outbuildings necessary for the shelter of grain and stock, while everything about his place is kept in good condition and presents a neat and attractive appearance. In 1881 Mr. Green chose as a companion and helpmate for life's journey Miss Genevieve Sweet, who was born in Channahon township, this county, in 1860, a daughter of Gilbert and Charlotte (Buell) Sweet. Her father passed to his final reward November 10, 1906, while the mother makes her home in Joliet. Unto our subject and his wife have been born four daughters and two sons, Elmer and Irma dying in infancy; Lois was married in January, 1907, to Logan King, a farmer of Plainfield township. Jessie, Gertrude, and Ralph are still under the parental roof. With the exception of a few years spent in Ford county, Mr. Green has spent his entire life in Will county, so that he has wide and favorable acquaintance and is accounted an enterprising and public-spirited citizen of his home locality.
