Haywood has throughout his entire life been connected with the agricultural interests of Will county, for he is one of its native sons, his birth having occurred in Lockport township, February 14, 1849, on the old homestead farm, which has been his place of residence to the present time, with the exception of eleven years spent in Chicago. He is now the owner of this property, which comprises two hundred acres of valuable and well improved land, on which are found many improvements, including a nice country home and substantial outbuildings for the shelter of grain and stock. His parents, Samuel and Elizabeth (Akin) Haywood, were natives of the east, the former born in Maine in 1814, and the latter in New York, November 2, 1825. The father followed farming in the Pine Tree state until 1838, when he made his way westward, locating in the city of Lockport, Illinois, where he made his home for two years. He then removed to a farm in Lockport township, this property having been in possession of the family since that time. Both the father and mother are now deceased, the latter having passed away June 29, 1863, at the comparatively early age of forty-two years. The father was a republican in his political views and affiliations, and his family numbered eight children: Charles, Abraham, Lora, Ella, Turiel, Mary, William and Irwin. Mr. Haywood acquired his education in the district schools and the Joliet high school, while during the summer seasons he received practical lessons in the work of carrying on the home farm, and he is today continuing the work of development and improvement which was instituted by his father. Upon the death of the latter he purchased the interest of the other heirs in the property, which has made him owner of two hundred acres. He is here engaged in general farming and stock-raising and is meeting with very desirable success. On the 28th of August, 1887, occurred the marriage of Mr. Haywood and Miss Lillie Brown, who was born in Lockport. At her death, which occurred in 1892, she left one son, Howard, who is now a high-school student. Mr. Haywood has followed in the political steps of his father, thus giving his support to the republican party. He is a highly respected citizen of his home locality, where he is known for his reliability and trustworthiness in all trade transactions. His home has become endeared to him through the associations of his early boyhood and youth as well as the events of later manhood, and he finds in the agricultural resources of Will county ample opportunity for the acquirement of a goodly competence.
