Heise, state's attorney of Will county, was born in Joliet, July 14, 1869, and the city of his birth has continuously been the city of his residence. His parents, A. W. and Laura (De 2eng) Heise, were natives of Germany and of the United States, respectively. The father was a graduate of the Heidelburg (Germany) Medical College and the University of Goettining. He acted with the insurrectionists in the German rebellion of 1848 and following the close of that war came to America in 1849. For two years he traveled in the south as a correspondent for German newspapers and then came north, settling in Dupage county, Illinois, where he practiced his profession for several years. In 1861 he came to Joliet, where he entered upon the active practice of medicine, but as the war progressed he felt called upon to aid his adopted country and enlisted as a surgeon in the One Hundredth Illinois Infantry. Subsequently he was promoted to the rank of brigade surgeon and later was made chief hospital inspector of the Army of the Cumberland, in which position he continued until he resigned in 1864 on account of ill health. He then returned to Joliet, where he practiced his profession until his death, which occurred in 1893. He was physician to the penitentiary here for a number of years and had a very large private practice, being recognized as one of the leading physicians of this section of the state. His wife passed away in 1871. William D. Heise, their only child, was educated in the Northwestern Military Academy, the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Law School, being graduated from the law department in 1890. In 1892 he was admitted to the bar and has since followed his profession with constantly growing success. His mind is logical and inductive and the thoroughness and care with which he has prepared his eases have been strong elements in his success. In the fall of 1896 he was elected state's attorney and the consensus of public opinion regarding his official service is indicated by the fact that he has been twice re-elected and is now serving in that office for the third term. Mr. Heise has been active in republican politics since he became of age and has been chairman and secretary of many conventions. His opinions have often been decisive factors in the councils of the party and while he has not been an aspirant for office outside of the strict path of his profession, he has labored effectively and untiringly for party success. For several years he has served on the public library board in Joliet and community interests elicit his earnest attention and oft times receive his hearty co-operation. On the 10th of November, 1898, Mr. Heise was married to Miss Florida Casey, a daughter of Dr. John R. Casey, of Joliet, and they have two sons, William C. and John C.
