J. Higgins, engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery along scientific lines at Joliet, his native city, was born September 4, 1871. His father, Bartholomew Higgins, a stationary engineer, was born in the north of Ireland in 1824 and came to this country with his three sisters when but two years old. His parents were both lost at sea. He was reared in New York for about seven years and at the age of nine years became a resident of Sandusky, Ohio, where he remained until twenty-two years of age. At that time he was married to Eleanor Muller and in 1849 they removed to Joliet, Illinois, where in 1856 Mr. Higgins secured a position as stationary engineer with the Michigan Central Railroad Company, acting in that capacity for thirty-five years. His long continued service is incontrovertible evidence of his capability and fidelity. He died January 3, 1897, and was survived for several years by his wife, who passed away June 3, 1905. Reared in his native city, Dr. Higgins entered the public schools at the usual age and passed through successive grades until he had completed the common-school course. He entered the Northwestern University at Evanston in 1890 to pursue a course in medicine, having in the meantime studied along that line under the direction of Dr. Shaw and Dr. Curtis in 1888, 1889 and 1890. His collegiate course was completed by graduation from the medical department of the Northwestern University on the 20th of June, 1901, after which he came to Joliet, where he has since been continuously engaged in practice, his success gradually increasing as his ability has become recognized. He is a member of the Will County Medical Society, the Illinois State Medical Society and the American Medical Association and thus keeps in touch with the trend of modern thought and progress as represented by the medical fraternity. He has carried his investigations and researches far and wide into the realms of professional knowledge and is a physician whose ability is acknowledged by his fellow members of the medical fraternity and by the general public in a large and constantly increasing practice. Dr. Higgins was married in Joliet on the 10th of September, 1902, to Miss Mamie Conlon, a daughter of John Conlon, one of the early residents of the city where he is still residing. The Doctor and his wife have one son, Robert Edward, who was born July 29, 1903. The parents have many warm friends in the city where they have spent their entire lives and the hospitality of many of the best homes of Joliet is freely accorded them. Dr. Higgins is prominent politically as an active worker in the ranks of the republican party and belongs to the Northwestern Republican Club and the German-American Republican Club. His interest in the questions and issues of the day is that of a public-spirited citizen and he is enabled to support his position by intelligent argument. His time and attention, however, are chiefly given to his profession. He is examiner for several old-line life insurance companies and is chief examiner for the Prudential Company. In addition he has a large and growing private practice, for which his qualifications well fit him. He discharges his duties with a sense of conscientious obligation and his efforts have been attended by excellent results when viewed from both a professional and financial standpoint.
