Kaehlert, of Joliet, who established a nursery business in 1895 and is also making a specialty of the raising of lettuce, mushrooms and parsley, together with flowering plants, was born in Germany in 1846 and came from Missouri to Will county on the 24th of June, 1869. He had previously served as a soldier of the Civil war, having enlisted in 1863 as a member of Company A, Thirtieth Michigan Infantry, with which he remained for eighteen months. He afterward joined Company F, of the Twelfth Missouri Militia, of which he became first sergeant. This command was engaged in hunting bushwhackers and the company was one hundred and sixty strong for a year and a half. Following his removal to this state Mr. Kaehlert worked as a stonemason and was employed in a rolling mill. In the former connection he assisted in the building of the opera house and St. Mary’s church. He also built one of the finest homes in the city—a stone structure for P. C. Haley. He was engaged in contracting for ten years as a stonemason and quarryman, on the expiration of which period he turned his attention to the nursery business, in which he is still engaged. He did a jobbing business and four years ago began the cultivation of flowers. He raises all kinds of plants and flowers and sells cut flowers. He also is known as a specialist in the production of lettuce, mushrooms and parsley, and as the years have passed he has built up an excellent business, his trade having steadily increased until it has now reached extensive proportions. Mr. Kaehlert was married in Missouri, in 1867, to Miss Constance Schneider, who was born in Germany, and they have three sons, Charles, William and Edward. Mr. Kaehlert owns and occupies a fine residence, which he erected in the year 1892, doing all the work himself. It is twenty-one by ninety-six feet and is heated by hot air and hot water. His political allegiance is given to the democracy, but he has neither time nor inclination to take, an active part in politics as an office seeker, preferring to concentrate his energies upon his business affairs, in which he is now meeting with a goodly measure of prosperity.
