McGUFFIN, M. D. In a profession where advancement depends solely upon individual merit, skill and conscientious devotion to duty, Dr. McGuffin has won a creditable place. He was born in Aledo, Mercer county, Illinois, July 1, 1859. His father, John G. McGuffin, a native of Washington county, Pennsylvania, born August 12, 1829, came to Illinois in 1854 and for two years was engaged in teaching school in Warren county, this state. He located in Aledo soon after the establishment of the town and engaged in clerking in a store there for a time, while subsequently he carried on business on his own account. At the time of the Civil war, however, he put aside all commercial and personal considerations in order to aid his country in the preservation of the Union, enlisting as a member of Company K, One Hundred and Second Illinois Volunteer infantry. He was orderly sergeant of his company and served until 1864, when he was honorably discharged and returned to Aledo, where he resided until his life's labors were ended in death on the 26th of March, 1904. His wife, Margaret Harris, was born in Adair county, Kentucky, February 2, 1832, and in 1840 came to Illinois, living near Aledo until her marriage to John G. McGuffin, in 1858. She has since been a resident of the city of Aledo, where she still makes her home. Dr. McGuffin, their only child, is indebted to the public school system of Aledo for his early educational privileges. His more specifically literary education was acquired in Aledo Academy and his professional training was received in Rush Medical College in Chicago, from which he was graduated with the class of 18S3. He came to Joliet in 1885, began the practice of medicine here, and has since won a creditable place as a representative of the medical fraternity. Anything which tends to bring to man the key to that complex mystery which we call life is of interest to him and he keeps abreast with the best thinking men in the practice of medicine and surgery, thus constantly promoting his ability and efficiency. Dr. McGuffin was married in Joliet, January 26, 1888, to Miss Mars Palmer, a daughter of Professor I. S. Palmer, well known in the state of Illinois. Dr. McGuffin holds membership in Mount Joliet lodge, No. 42, A. F. & A. M.; in Joliet chapter, No. 27, R, A. M.; in Powhattan lodge, No. 42, I. 0. 0. F.; Joliet lodge. No. 532, K. P.; and Joliet lodge, No. 396, B. P. 0. E., while of the White Cross he is supreme medical director. The liberal patronage accorded him is indicative of the consensus of public opinion regarding his ability, while his strong personal traits of character have won for him many warm friendships during the twenty-one years of his residence in Joliet.
