E. Mottinger, acceptably filling the position of county clerk of Will county since 1902, his ability and fidelity being indicated by his re-election in the fall of 1906, resides in Plainfield, in which place his birth occurred on the 4th of March, 1853. His parents were George and Caroline (Keim) Mottinger, who came to Will county about 1845. The father was born in Pennsylvania and as a child removed to Ohio. His wife was a native of Germany and was a young lady of eighteen years when she arrived in Will county, a sister having preceded her to the new world. George Mottinger was a minister of the Evangelical church in Ohio, but following his removal to Illinois he purchased land in Plainfield township and engaged in the operation of his farm until his death, which occurred in 1873, when he was sixty-eight years of age. His wife died several years later, passing away about 1881, when fifty-four years of age. The members of their family, in addition to A. E. Mottinger, are: L. H. Mottinger, formerly sheriff of Will county and now proprietor of the St. Nicholas hotel at Joliet; M. O., a retired farmer living in Plainfield; and Mrs. Minnie O. Simmons, of Kansas City, Missouri. A. E. Mottinger was reared in Plainfield township, where he has always resided. He remained upon the home farm until 1881, when, at the age of twenty-eight years, he took up his abode in the village, where he engaged in merchandising until 1898. He then came to Joliet and served as chief deputy sheriff under his brother, L. H. Mottinger, acting in that capacity until 1902, when he was elected county clerk. He discharged his duties with such promptness and fidelity that in the fall of 1906 he was re-elected and is the present incumbent of the office. Mr. Mottinger was married in 1873 to Miss Mary E. Wraith, the eldest daughter of James and Sophia Wraith, of Plainfield, who were old settlers. Mr. Wraith was for years engaged in the wagon manufacturing business and was closely associated with the industrial life of the community. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Mottinger have been born three daughters, Maud, the wife of Dr. Brown, of Plainfield; Irene and Grace, both at home. In his social connections Mr. Mottinger is a Mason, holding membership in Plainfield lodge, A. F. & A. M. Joliet chapter, No. 27, R. A. M., and Joliet commandery, No. 4, K. T. He is likewise, connected with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Joliet and is a charter member of Plainfield camp, No 938, M. W. A. He also has membership relations in the Commercial club of Joliet and is widely and favorably known in the county seat as well as in Plainfield, where he has always lived.
