Murphy, engaged in the grocery business at No. 501 South Chicago street, is a native son of Joliet, born on the 12th of August, 1872. His father, Frank Murphy, was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1834 and came to the United States when twelve or fourteen years of age, locating in Joliet, where he remained for two or three years. He then went to California in 1849, attracted by the discovery of gold on the Pacific slope. He was married in Sacramento county, California, to Miss Mary Brock, a native of Chicago. The wedding was celebrated in 1862 and about six years later Mr. Murphy returned to Joliet and soon afterward purchased a farm in Troy township. He lived thereon until 1887, when he removed to Nebraska. After selling his property in this county he took his family to the west, establishing his home in Madison county, Nebraska, where he remained for eight years. His death occurred in that state in 1890, after which his widow with her five sons and two daughters returned to Joliet. The members of the family are Patrick Murphy, now living in South Omaha, Nebraska; Kate, the wife of Frank Haley, of South Ottawa street, Joliet; Frank B., of this review; Thomas W., who is engaged in business with his brother; Margaret K, who is living with her mother at No. 108 North Broadway, Joliet; James J., who resides with his sister in Joliet; and David A., who is living with his mother on North Broadway. Frank B. Murphy acquired his early education in the public schools and afterward became a student in St. Mary's Seminary at Perryville, Missouri. He accompanied his parents on their removal to the west and his mother upon her return to Joliet and here, in June, 1902, he opened a grocery store at No. 501 South Chicago street. He has a fine business, his trade constantly growing until it has now reached extensive and profitable proportions. On the 9th of August, 1905, in Joliet, Mr. Murphy was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Griffin, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Griffin, the former a well-known resident of this city. He is now living with Mr. and Mrs. Murphy at No. 106 D'Arcy avenue, his wife having passed away, however, twenty years ago. Mr. Murphy is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He stands as a high type of the enterprising business man and is a prominent representative of the retail trade in Joliet, displaying the spirit of energy and determination which enable him to overcome all obstacles and make steady progress in trade circles.
