A native of Germany, he was born in the southern part of that country in 1859 and there learned the trade of watchmaking. He has a brother living in Chicago who is the only other representative of the family in the new world. When twenty years of age Carl Oesterle, crossing the Atlantic to the United States, took up his abode in Joliet, where he arrived in January, 1881. He had become an expert watchmaker in his native country and here he entered the employ of Henry Young, working at his trade. In the fall of the same year, however, he formed a partnership with T. W. Martin under the firm style of Martin & Oesterle, jewelers and watchmakers. They located on Jefferson street, where they remained until 1885, when Mr. Oesterle withdrew from the firm and started in business on his own account. He now carries a full and complete line of watches, jewelry, diamonds and cut glass, having a well appointed store: its neat and tasteful arrangement, its reasonable prices and his courteous treatment of his customers all combining to secure him a liberal patronage. Mr. Oesterle is also watch inspector for the Michigan Central Railroad and the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, and he employs an optician, engraver and watchmaker to assist him in carrying on his business. Mr. Oesterle was married in Joliet to Miss Louisa Bez, who died in 1896, leaving four children, Albert C., Margaret P., Louisa L. and Clarence L., all at home. The last named is in the store with his father and is an engraver by trade. Mr. Oesterle is independent in politics. He is connected with the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, the Knights of Pythias fraternity and the Masonic lodge. He is today the oldest jeweler in years of consecutive business connection at Joliet and has been at his present location for the past seventeen years. His standing in trade circles is proportionate to the length of his connection with business interests here, he being justly accounted one of the leading merchants of the city.
