He was born in Erie county, Pennsylvania, December 14, 1838, and comes of German ancestry. His parents were Peter and Margaret (Kinsinger) Schott, both natives of the Keystone state. The father was a laborer in Pennsylvania, whence he afterward removed to Indiana, where he enlisted for service in the Civil war and died at the front, his death occurring at Louisville, Kentucky. He also had four brothers who served in the Civil war. Mrs. Schott survived for a long period and died about three years ago, at the advanced age of eighty years. Peter Schott located in Will county in the fall of 1855, first going to Wheatland township, but after a brief period he came to Plainfield township and purchased the farm which has since been his home. All this has been cleared and improved by the present owner, for when it came into his possession it still stood in its natural state. In due course of time he placed the land under cultivation and year by year added to his financial resources, for his fields yielded abundant harvests. He added to his holdings from time to time until he became the owner of two hundred and twenty-seven acres of well improved land, but he has since disposed of a portion of this and now retains the ownership of one hundred and twenty-four acres. That he has been successful in his farming operations is indicated by the fact that when he made his first purchase of land he incurred an indebtedness of four thousand dollars, but that entire amount has been liquidated and he is now comfortably situated in life. Mr. Schott has been twice married. He was first married in Plainfield, in 1858, to Miss Mary Willis, a native of Ohio. She died in 1886, at the age of fifty-seven years, after a happy married life of twenty-eight years. The three children of this marriage are as follows: Dr. Ira J. Schott, a practicing physician of Naperville, Illinois, was graduated from Hahnemann Medical College, at Chicago. He wedded Miss Hattie Rickert, of Naperville. Ida J. is the wife of Henry Klett, a resident farmer of Plainfield township. They have become the parents of eight children: Warren, Howard, Maud, Jessie, Bessie, Morris, Gertie and John. Alferetta is the wife of Elias G. Hartong, who operates the homestead farm in Plainfield township. She has become the mother of two sons, Lawrence and Russell. For his second wife Mr. Schott chose Cora Mae Harder, of Lockport, to whom he was married in 1888. She was born in Lockport township, a daughter of Frank and Emma (Brinkerhoff) Harder, who still reside in that township. Mr. Schott's study of the political questions and issues of the day has led him to give hearty support to the republican party, while his religious views are indicated by his membership in the Methodist Episcopal church, to which his wife also belongs. Although, now sixty-eight years of age. Mr. Schott still gives his attention to the operation of the home farm. He may truly be called a self-made man, for he started out in the business world without capital and with no assistance, but through his untiring labors and close application to business interests he has steadily advanced on the highway of success until he is today worthy of classification among the well-to-do and highly esteemed residents of Plainfield township.
