Hs parents were John and Catherine Shutts, who removed with their family from the Empire state to Will county, Illinois, in 1855, locating on the Shutts farm, two miles southeast of Joliet, now held by the Country Club for golf and other outdoor sports. The family consisted of six sons and two daughters: Catherine, the widow of Thomas Tait and a resident of Joliet; Henry, who died December 9, 1902, Samuel, living in Joliet; John, who died February 11, 1902; Cassius, who makes his home in St. Joseph, Missouri; Peter of this review; Frank, living at Woodston, Kansas; and Mary, who died unmarried February 11, 1890. The mother died on the old home farm, December 21, 1878, and the father continued to reside thereon until about the time of his death, which occurred September 7, 1899. Peter Shutts was reared to manhood on his father's farm and attended school only at the old stone schoolhouse, known as the Babylon school, located on the farm. In 1872 he learned the printing trade in the office of the Joliet Signal and shortly afterward formed a partnership with Calneh Zarley and R. S. Brown, as publishers of that newspaper, which connection continued until 1882. In May of that year, having studied law in his leisure hours, Mr. Shutts was admitted to the bar and formed a law partnership at Joliet with James R. Flanders, which continued for about ten years, since which time he has conducted his law business alone. He is an industrious lawyer, giving most careful attention to the interests entrusted to his care, is a thorough and discriminating student and has secured a large clientage which connects him with much important litigation tried in the courts of the district. On the 29th of June, 1886, Mr. Shutts was united in marriage to Miss Harriet S. Bush, daughter of Frank and Harriet Bush, of Joliet, and resides on Grover street with his wife and family of five children: Gladys, Marjorie, Irving, Glenn and Janet.
