Stanley, who was one of the honored and respected business men of Joliet, passed away in 1895, thus terminating a life record which had compassed a period of about seventy-six years. He was born in Westmoreland, Oneida county, New York, June 17, 1819, and spent his boyhood and youth in the east, acquiring such educational advantages as he had opportunity for and afterward earning his own living by working in a blast foundry and furnace. The tide of emigration was steadily flowing westward as the countries were being opened up to civilization and. the work of development and material improvement was being carried forward. Mr. Stanley was among those who, leaving the Empire state, sought homes in Illinois. He made his way to Will county and was first employed in the lumberyard of William Adams, in Joliet. That he proved capable and faithful is indicated by the fact that he remained with the firm for thirty-seven years, being with that house at the time of his death. He was then serving as bookkeeper. He had become thoroughly acquainted with the business in every detail and was much missed because of his efficiency in business and also by reason of his genuine personal worth. Mr. Stanley was married in 1845 to Miss Barbara Munroe, who was born in Scotland and was two years of age when brought to America by her parents, the family settling in Brownville, Jefferson county, New York, where she was married. She was a daughter of Daniel and Jane (Richmond) Munroe. The mother died when her daughter Barbara was only four years old and the father afterward married Jane McMillen, whose death resulted from falling downstairs. Mrs. Stanley was the youngest of three children, her brothers being George and Angus Munroe, both now deceased. The former was for many years a most prominent and influential business man of Joliet. By his second wife Daniel Munroe had three sons: Daniel, who died in Idaho of mountain fever while prospecting for gold; James, who also passed away in that state; and John, who is now living in Boise City, Idaho. Mrs. Stanley is an aunt of George H. Munroe, one of the most distinguished and prominent residents of Joliet. By her marriage she became the mother of three daughters. Sarah is the wife of Steven De Long, who is a rural mail carrier, and they live with Mrs. Stanley. They have three children: Frank De Long, who is assistant postmaster at Joliet; and Gertrude and Grace, twins. The former married W. W. Smith, a tax collector, and the latter is the wife of Don Mateer, a city salesman in the Barrett hardware store in Joliet. Frances, the second daughter of the Stanley family, is the wife of Ephraim Schaffner, who for some time has been an invalid. They have two sons, Edwin S. and Benjamin, and one daughter, Frances, now the wife of James Barber, by whom she has one child. Hattie Stanley is at home with her mother. Mr. Stanley gave his political allegiance to the republican party, but was not active in the sense of office seeking, as his time and attention were fully occupied by his business cares. During the long period of his residence in Joliet he won many friends and no man in business life was more trustworthy or enjoyed in higher degree the confidence of those with whom he was associated. Mrs. Stanley is a member of the Baptist church and a most estimable lady, whose good traits of heart and mind have endeared her to those with whom she has come in contact.
