He is a son of August Veuve, who was a carpenter by trade and thus provided for the support of his family. He married Susan Marie Soguel, who was born in Switzerland, in which country both spent their entire lives. The father died in 1871, at the age of fifty-eight years, and the mother's death occurred in 1876, at the age of sixty-five years. They were both faithful members of the Lutheran Church. Charles Veuve, their only child, obtained his education in the common schools of his native land and afterward learned the trade of watchmaking there. No other country has ever equaled Switzerland in the excellence, beauty and durability of its watches and Mr. Veuve was fortunate in receiving his business training therefore in that country. Thinking to enjoy better business opportunities in the new world, he came to the United States in 1879 and settled at State Center, Iowa. There he engaged in farming for four years, after which he removed to Elgin, Illinois, and for twelve years was employed in the Elgin Watch Factory. In 1894 he came to Peotone and with the money which he had saved from his earnings he established a jewelry store and has since been very successful in its conduct. It is the only store of the kind in the town and Mr. Veuve carries a good line of jewelry and is meeting with desirable prosperity, owing to his enterprise, reasonable prices and earnest efforts to please his patrons. He is also engaged in the fitting and sale of spectacles and eye-glasses. He is an eye specialist, having been graduated from the Northern Illinois College of Ophthalmology and Otology in 1896. He is thus well qualified to carry on this branch of his business and is doing good work therein. Mr. Veuve was married in 1869 in Switzerland to Miss Louise Bull, who was born in that country in 1849 and died in this country in 1887. They were the parents of seven children: Juliette, wife of J. P. Hager, who is traveling auditor for a mercantile insurance company and resides in Chicago; Marcus, who is in the Elgin Watch Factory; Charles, deceased; Marguerite, who is a trained nurse in Chicago; Maurice, who is in the office of the American Grass Twine Company in New York city; Augusr, who is employed in a wholesale liquor establishment in Chicago; and Jeanne, a trained nurse in Hahnemann Hospital in Chicago. Mr. Veuve gives his political support to the republican party but has never sought or desired office. He keeps well informed on the questions of the day. He is a member of the National Union and is also identified with the Modern Woodmen of America. He has never had occasion to regret his determination to seek a home in America, for he has here found opportunities he sought and in the business world has won success, while in social circles he has gained the warm personal regard of many friends.
