White, who is engaged in the livery business and who is also a breeder of high-grade driving horses, as well as other stock, is a native son of Will county, his birth having occurred on the old homestead farm in Florence township, December 2, 1859. He is a son of John M. and Marjorie S. (McIntosh) White, the latter now deceased, further mention of whom is made on another page of this work. Mr. White was educated in the schools of Wilmington, and later, graduated from a business college in Springfield m March, 1881, thus being well fitted for a business career. He remained with his parents until he reached man’s estate, and, in the spring of 1883, began farming for himself in Florence township. In addition to carrying on general agricultural pursuits, he likewise bred Norman horses and bought and fed cattle for the Chicago market. He continued in farming and stock-raising interests until October 16, 1892, when he sold out and removed to Wilmington, where he bought the livery business of his brother, Daniel M. White. In June, 1895, he purchased the livery business of his uncle, Robert White, removing the latter to his present stand, and here he has continued to the present time, enjoying a large patronage, for he keeps his vehicles in excellent condition and has only the finest horses in his stables. He has been very successful in this business venture and is today classed among the leading business men of this city. He also owns a farm of twenty acres, on which he is engaged in breeding horses and other stock, having some high-grade animals on his place. On the 12th of March, 1884, Mr. White was united in marriage to Miss Florence Hart, who was born in Louisville, Kentucky, August 9, 1857, a daughter of Charles H. and Jane A. (Mead) Hart, the former born in Ohio, January 20, 1820, and the latter in the Blue Grass state, November 17, 1819. They were married in the latter state, April 27, 1843, and both are now deceased, the former having passed away July 25, 1903, while the mother had preceded him to the home beyond, her death occurring May 25, 1889. The father was an architect and contractor in Louisville, erecting many buildings in that city, being one of its most prominent business men. He removed to this state in the early '60s, at which time he located on a farm in Florence township, being there engaged in general agricultural pursuits. He removed to Kansas City in 1881, making that his home until 1890. His wife having died in the meantime, he then returned to Will county, spending his last days in Wilmington with his daughter, Mrs. White. He served as alderman during his residence in Louisville and was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity, joining that body upon his removal to Wilmington. He held membership with the Universalist church in Louisville and was a man of high moral character, honest and upright in his dealings with his fellow-men. Of the seven children born unto Mr. and Mrs. Hart, five are now living: Hartley D., George H., Bushrod W., Mrs. White and Maud. Mr. White's study of the political issues and questions of the day has led him to give his political support to the republican party, while he holds membership with the Presbyterian church. While residing on the farm he served his township as clerk for one term, and in the spring of 1905 was elected alderman of the second ward in his home town. Mr. and Mrs. White occupy a pleasant home in Wilmington and are surrounded by a host of warm personal friends, while Mr. White is one of the prominent business men of the city, conducting a prosperous enterprise.
