The Review [Decatur IL] October 25, 1883
A German miner at Braidwood was killed on Tuesday night by falling down one of 
the shafts. He pushed an empty pit car on the wrong side of the shaft, 
evidently supposing the cage was there to receive it. But it was not, and the 
car, meeting with no resistance, went down, with the unfortunate man on top of 
it. The shaft was ninety feet deep.
