He settled on a farm at Gooding's Grove, in Will County, and in 1834 and 1835 was engaged in making a survey for the Wabash and Erie Canal. Before he had completed this work he was appointed chief engineer of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which office he held from 1836 to 1848. He was elected Secretary of the Board of Canal Trustees in 1849, and acted as treasurer of the canal fund until 1871. In the meantime he had acted as chief engineer of the Illinois River improvements, and as one of the board of commissioners of the Board of Public Works in Chicago. He was also President of the Joliet and Chicago Railway Company at the time of its organization. Mr. Gooding was a whig, and later, a Republican in politics, and a Unitarian in religion.
