Decatur [IL] Review December 20, 1903
Joliet, Ills., Dec. 19-Joseph Messersmith, a Braidwood merchant crazed with 
grief because his wife, daughter and an employe perished in the fire which 
destroyed his store Monday, attempted suicide by taking poison. He tried to 
end his life Tuesday, when a bottle of strychnine was taken from him, and made 
two attempts to secure laudanum before he finally secured it. He fought 
against the administering of antidotes, and undoubtedly owes his life to the 
fact that the druggist secretly diluted the poison with water before selling 
it to him.
