She claims to have left Elgin Tuesday, going to Chicago, and taking a train for St. Louis; that she was visiting in Elgin with her step- mother, who went away, and that she would not stay alone, that she had a father, a lawyer in St. Louis. U. thanking them for bringing flowers on "Flower Day:" "Dear Ladies: Please accept my sincere thanks for the beautiful flowers you left in my cell. I must tell you that your flowers are highly appreciated by the prisoners. Who can fathom the depths of mothers' and sisters' love, especially if it be sanctified by faith in Christ? Although the world despise, forsake, and leave us alone to die, yet there is hope, a desire to help lead us back to a better life. I know there are some people who say, 'As you make your best, so lie in it; you have no one to blame but yourselves.' But not so with an all-loving and merciful God, who sees our temptations, our situations, and our weakness in yielding to sin. Not so with mothers and sisters, who take us as they find us. If it be in prosperity, none can be better pleased; if in adversity, none can extend to us truer sympathy. You not only brighten out prison lives by decorating our cells with flowers and sending us interesting reading, but extending a helping hand and lead us back to righteousness. May God bless you in your good temperance work. To what does intemperance lead? To debased manhood, wronged womanhood, defrauded childhood. It holds a mortgage over every cradle. Wishing you success in your good work, I remain yours truly." The Will County Medical Society elected its officers Tuesday: President, Dr. R. J. Curtiss; Vice President, Dr. S. T.
