Father R.H. McGuire, a Catholic priest, shot his sexton and usher, it is thought fatally, through mistaking him for a burglar. It seems that the priest was unwell and in bed at about 8 o'clock, when Mr. Muldowney, who had spent the afternoon at his bedside, came in and started up-stairs in the dark. Mr. McGuire asked twice: "Who is there?" without eliciting any reply. He then said: "Tell me your name, or I will shoot!" No reply came and he did shoot, three or four times, when Muldowney gasped: "Father you've shot me!" The priest, immediately overwhelmed at his act, gave bonds in the sum of $5,000, and went to lay the case before Bishop Foley this morning. The doctors pronounce Muldowney's case extremely doubtful. The wounded man is City Marshal of Braidwood, and stands well in the community. The unfortunate affair is the theme of much conversation, as both men were of the best habits.
