E. Clarke Killed by Lamp Explosion in California Alone in a camp wagon by the side of the road near Hamet, Cal., W. E. Clarke was burned to death, presumably from the explosion of a lamp. The body, partially burned, was found the next morning. The wagon was entirely destroyed. A letter was found in his effects which said: "In case of death please have body cremated and ashes scattered to the winds." Clarke came from Joliet, Ill., to Los Angeles for his health.
