Matthies, 92, of Peotone, died Monday, July 20, 2009. Born June 5, 1917, in Beecher. Farmed in Beecher, then owned and operated Matthies Trucking and Matthies Consignment Auction. Graduate of the Art Feller College of Auctioneers. Later worked at the Ford Motor Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights and retired in 1977. He and his wife moved to Three Lakes, Wisconsin, where they managed the Triangle Motel for 15 years. Then returned to Peotone. Past president of the Peotone Sportsman's Club. Former trustee of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Peotone, where he was a member. Former member of the Bradley Moose, Northern Lights Snowmobile Club and Three Lakes Unlimited. Member of the Ambassador Club of the Ford Motor Company. Enjoyed playing cards, horseshoes, bowling, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. Survived by his wife of 69 years, Hilda Wolkow Matthies, whom he married on January 20, 1940, at Zion Lutheran Church in Beecher; 1 daughter, Patricia (Gerald) Harms Misner of Bourbonnais; 1 son, William H. (Bonnie) Matthies of Peotone; 3 grandchildren, Brent (Kris) Harms of Manteno; Nathan Matthies and Meghan Matthies, both of Peotone. Preceded in death by his parents, William G. and Caroline Grages Matthies; and 3 sisters, Blondie Bory, Alice Schroeder and Esther Huberts. Funeral conducted July 24, 2009 at Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home in Beecher. Burial Peotone Cemetery.
