Pierce, 83, of Peotone, died Sunday,February 14, 2010 at RML Specialty Hospital in Hinsdale. Visitation 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home, Peotone, where services are 11 a.m. Thursday. Rev. Timothy Mitchell will officiate. Interment will be in the Peotone Cemetery. Pallbearers: Greg and Matthew Oliver, Tom and Forrest Helfrich, and Steve and Eddie Saliba. Honorary pallbearers: Ralph Daum and Virgil Holl. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. Former superintendent of Peotone 207-U School District from 1967 until retiring July 1, 1987 and responsible for implementing many new programs in the Peotone school district, including bringing a football program to the high school. Born May 16, 1926, in Pontiac, the son of Jack B. Sr. and Kathryn O'Connell Pierce. Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois; Master of Arts degree from Bradley University; additional graduate honors from Illinois State University and Northern Illinois University. Member of Phi Kappa Psi and Phi Delta Kappa. Participated in track and played football for the University of Illinois from 1945-1949 and was a member of the 1947 winning Rose Bowl team. Played professional football for one year with the Detroit Lions; Life member of the University of Illinois Varsity I Association; Life member of the Illinois Alumni Association; Member of the BPOE (Elks); Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II; Member of the VFW, and member and past commander of the Peotone American Legion Post 392 for more than 60 years; Member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators for 23 years; Member of the board of directors for the Illinois Association of School Administrators for 8 years; Board member of the Peotone Library District when it was formed; Vice chairman of the Peotone bicentennial celebration; Member of the Peotone United Methodist Church, where he was a former chairman of the Peotone Methodist Church Administrative Council and former Sunday school teacher. Secretary of the Peotone Chamber of Commerce; Original member of the Peotone Fire Protection District Board of Trustees; Original member that formed the Kankakee Area Career Center, where he held the office of president, vice president and secretary of the district board; One of the founding superintendents of the Special Education Co-op called SOWIC serving as president, vice president and secretary of the executive council; Superintendent of the administrative district of the K-W curriculum which serviced a number of schools in Chapter 1 and gifted; Administrative superintendent of the Early Prevention of School Failure; Republican precinct committeeman for 12 years; Peotone Village Trustee from 1987-1989; Peotone Township Supervisor from 1989-2008; Was currently serving as a trustee for Peotone Township; Was currently an adviser to the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging serving on its board of directors in Will County. Volunteer for 20 years at Provena St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee. Surviving: Wife, the former Geraldine Rabe, of Peotone, whom he married February 8, 1948, at the Pontiac Methodist Church; 2 daughters and three sons-in-law: Jean and Greg Oliver, Ginger and Steve Saliba, all of Peotone, Tom Helfrich of Wilmington; Grandchildren: Samantha, Forrest, Hayley and Kacie Helfrich of Wilmington, Matthew and Jackie Oliver of Peotone, Eddie, John and Andrew Saliba of Peotone; Great-grandson, Bradley Oliver; 1 sister and brother-in-law, Prudence and Jack Holt. Preceded in death by his parents; 1 daughter, Jill Helfrich (2007); 1 brother, Richard Pierce (1943 while serving in World War II).
