Obit of Charlie Thurmond Dated in ink as Sept 9, 1950. Newspaper unknown. Funeral Rites for Johnston City Resident Funeral rites were held this afternoon in Johnston City for Charlie Thurmond, 66, shop mechanic at Old Ben mine No 8, who died Saturday afternoon in the Herrin hospital. Thurmond suffered a stroke three weeks ago. He had been receiving treatment at the Herrin hospital for four days. Services were held this afternoon at Washington Avenue Baptist church in Johnston City, where he was a member, with Rev. Frank Tebow, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery at Marion. Thurmond, a native of Kentucky, had been a resident of Johnston City for 35 years. He had been employed for several years by the Old Ben Company and was a member of the UMWA Local Union 959. Besides his widow, Mrs. Sylvia Henson Thurmond, he is survived by a son and daughter by a former marriage. Mrs. Mamie McInturf of Springfield, Mo., and Henry Thurmond of Rolla, Mo.; a grand son, Charles McInturf of Springfield Mo.; a sister Mrs. Clara Prow of Evansville, Ind., three half- sisters, Mrs. Walter Mattingly of Clay, Ky., Mrs. Anna Milligan and Miss Lottie Thurmond of Kentucky; five half-brothers, Roy, Clem, Beeckham, William and Hugh Thurmand of Kentucky. His first wife, Gertrude Reynolds Thurmond died in 1937.
