Editors Daily Times: Sheriff J. F. Taylor, of this county, was shot dead in this city to day, by a cattle drover whom he was endeavoring to arrest on suspicion of stealing the cattle which he was trying to sell at about one half of their actual value. The murderer escaped to the woods about a half mile south of the city. He was surrounded by the populace, but, pistol in hand, threatened to shoot anyone who should attempt to take him. Notwithstanding his threat, Mr. John Platt, one of our oldest citizens, advanced upon him, knocked him down with his fist, and took him into custody. He was safely lodged in jail, although a very great and excited crowd surrounded the jail and court house. The mob for some time seemed disposed to take the law into their own hands, and mete out justice in their own way; but the citizens generally rallied to the support of the law, and had the murderer securely imprisoned. Our community is very much excited at this horrid outrage. Mr. Taylor was a kind, good hearted man. He leaves a wife and several children to deplore his untimely end.
