A telephone message to L.G.Starr Tuesday afternoon informed him of the death of his brother-in-law, Joseph Hocker, of Monroe, Adams County, one of the best known residents of that section. The message came from his son John, a hardware dealer at Monroe, who said his father died of heart disease and promising to send details as to funeral, etc., today. The news of his death came as a shock to many friends here. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. J.E. Sunier, Mrs. L.G. Starr, Mrs. Josie Beberstine and of Alexander Bovin. A message from Monroe says that a week ago Mr. Hocker suffered an attack of stomach trouble with a slight bronchial complication, but in two or three days he seemed entirely recovered. Tuesday he was busy about his drug store and at the hour mentioned when suddenly he was heard to scream and persons in the store saw him grasp his hand over his heart and run into an adjacent room where he fell on a couch and expired almost instantly. A physician who was nearby responded within a minute or two but Mr. Hocker was dead when he reached his side. He was about sixty years old. He was a soldier of the rebellion, entering the army when but sixteen years old as a member of Co. K, 48th Ind. He is survived by his wife and six children. The latter are Rev. Harvey H. Hocker, formerly of this city, Prof. C.W. Hocker, principal of the Decatur high school, Tony, a druggist and John, a hardware dealer at Monroe, and another daughter, Mrs. Dr. McKeeman, lives in Ft. Wayne. The deceased was also a brother of Samuel H. Hocker, of this city. The funeral will be held at Monroe at ten o'clock Thursday afternoon, with burial at Monroe.
