Witness my hand and the Seal of said Court, this 16 day of June 1908 Submitted by Jane Hunter Hodgson danielh@azstarnet.com ====================================================================== OBITUARY (AGE 78) Obituaries Mrs. Susan Hocker, nee Weffler, was born February 21, 1821 in Switzerland and died Sunday morning, at 1:15, May 11, 1907, at the age of 76 years, two months and 19 days. At the the age of 11 the deceased emigrated with her parents from Switzerland to Stark County, Ohio, where she was married in 1842 to Stephen Hocker. Later Mr. and Mrs. Hocker moved to this state. Nine children, 8 sons and one daughter, were the offsprings of this union. Her husband died in 1873 since when Mrs. Hocker remained a widow. She leaves to cherish the hope of meeting in eternity 8 sons and one daughter, three sons having preceded her; besides this 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren survive her. Funeral services will take place tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at the house and at 10:00 at the Evangelical church here. Rev. D.M. Zechtel will preach in English and Rev. E.H. A telephone message to L.G.Starr Tuesday afternoon informed him of the death of his brother-in-law, Joseph Hocker, of Monroe, Adams County, one of the best known residents of that section. The message came from his son John, a hardware dealer at Monroe, who said his father died of heart disease and promising to send details as to funeral, etc., today. The news of his death came as a shock to many friends here. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. J.E. Sunier, Mrs. L.G. Starr, Mrs. Josie Beberstine and of Alexander Bovin. A message from Monroe says that a week ago Mr. Hocker suffered an attack of stomach trouble with a slight bronchial complication, but in two or three days he seemed entirely recovered. Tuesday he was busy about his drug store and at the hour mentioned when suddenly he was heard to scream and persons in the store saw him grasp his hand over his heart and run into an adjacent room where he fell on a couch and expired almost instantly. A physician who was nearby responded within a minute or two but Mr. Hocker was dead when he reached his side. He was about sixty years old. He was a soldier of the rebellion, entering the army when but sixteen years old as a member of Co. K, 48th Ind. He is survived by his wife and six children. The latter are Rev. Harvey H. Hocker, formerly of this city, Prof. C.W. Hocker, principal of the Decatur high school, Tony, a druggist and John, a hardware dealer at Monroe, and another daughter, Mrs. Dr. McKeeman, lives in Ft. Wayne. The deceased was also a brother of Samuel H. Hocker, of this city. He was father of Prof. C.W. Hocker, principal of the Decatur high school. He was a soldier of the rebellion, entering the army when but sixteen years old as a member of Co. K 48th Indiana infantry, and was assigned to the army of the Cumberland, and was with Sherman on his famous march to the sea. Hocker of South First street, died at 4:15 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at her home in Monroe. Death was due to complications and infirmities of old age. She had been ill four days. The deceased was born in French township February 17, 1849, a daughter of Fred and Mary Benne Sunier. Her entire life was spent in Adams county and for the past 81 years she has been a resident of Monroe. Surviving are five children: John F. Hocker, Monroe; Charles E. Hocker, Decatur; Rev. Harvey H. Hocker, Covina, California; Mrs. R.B. McKeeman, Fort Wayne; and Otis O. Hocker, Monroe. One daughter, Mrs. T.B. Oliver is deceased. Her husband, Joseph Hocker, preceded her in death. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Josephine Biberstine, Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Sarah Ewing, Oakland, California; Mrs. Cora Studebaker, Bluffton; Levi Bovine, Bluffton and Alex Bovine, Fort Wayne. One great great grandchild, 28 great grandchildren and 25 grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the home in Monroe with the Rev. Vernon Riley of the Friends church of Monroe officiating. Burial will be in the M.R.E. cemetery at Berne. Friends may view the body until 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the S.E. Black funeral home and at the residence in Monroe until time for the funeral Saturday.
