A reporter called at her home last evening and found her with her babe in her arms and with eyes swollen and red as if she had been weeping. When asked to tell the story of the desertion of her husband she said: "My husband received his pay at the Bass works where he was employed, last Thursday. He had been off part of the month, and when he came home from drawing his pay he showed me $7. He then put the money in his pocket and told me that he was going away never to come back and that I could earn my own living and support the children over the washboard. He had been drinking and I at first did not believe that he meant that he was going away for good. He left the house and I expected him back. Our baby was at the point of death and the doctor had given up the child. I did not believe my husband would desert me in such a condition. The rent is not paid, there are big gas bills unpaid and our grocery buill has not been settled. I waited for my husband to return but I have heard nothing from him. I have not the slightest idea where he has gone or what made him leave unless it was the fact that he had been drinking a great deal, and di not care to be around here. I do not know what I wil do as he left me without a penny and my child is very ill. We have never had any trouble before and it is hard for me to bear up under this."
