WAS KILLED AT DANVILLE [Illinois]
ENGINEER TILTON MEETS A HORRIBLE FATE
Perished at the Throttle Along With His Fireman and the Traveling Fireman
	At noon today a telegram was received by I.H. Shorey, requesting him to 
hunt up and convey to Josiah Tilton the news of the death of his son, Engineer 
Ed. Tilton, who was killed in a wreck on the Chicago and Eastern Illinois road 
this morning. The telegram did not go into detail, but from some Wabash 
trainmen who passed through Danville, the scene of the accident, it was learned 
that Mr. Tilton met his death while at the throttle of his engine entering that 
city. Some freight cars had been left on the main track and Mr. Tilton’s engine 
dashed into them while running at a high speed. On the engine were the fireman 
and the traveling fireman, names unknown by The Sentinel’s informant, both of 
whom were also instantly killed. The dead engineer was a resident of this city 
and ran a passenger engine on the Wabash road until 1894, when he was dismissed 
for alleged participation in the American Railway Union strike. He leaves a 
wife and several children who reside in Danville. The father of the deceased, 
Josiah Tilton, was not at home today and up to 2:30 o’clock he had not been 
located and was not informed of the terrible accident to his son. A later 
telegram stated that the remains would be buried at Danville tomorrow, but it 
is believed that the father will order them brought here for interment.
