He died of typhoid fever in the hospital at Savannah. He was the first soldier of the Spanish American war from this city who has died. The funeral was conducted during a blinding snow storm. There was considerable feeling expressed that his captain, W. T. Stott, did not attend the funeral. Capt. Stott’s Regrets. Rev. L. C. Goodrich received the following telegram at 6 o’clock Sunday evening from Capt. W. T. Stott at Indianapolis: “Business engagements make it impossible for me to attend the funeral of my friend Everson. Please to express to his mother my sincere sympathy. He was a splendid soldier, and that is saying much. W. T. STOTT, Capt. Co. K, 161st. The telegram was filed at Indianapolis at 2:31 o’clock p.m. and was not delivered here until 6 o’clock. Capt. Stott came down from Indianapolis Saturday night on the 8:33 train but returned to Indianapolis on the 10:18 train the same night, with the expectation of returning here Sunday morning on the 9:45 train to attend the funeral.
