Joseph Irwin Sweeney, son of Elder Z. T. Sweeney, while in bathing in the river at Columbus Monday evening, was drowned and his body was recovered about a half hour afterwards. It seems that he had dived once into water about four feet deep and came out all right, and said, “I believe I will try it again,” when he again went under the water. He did not come up, but the back of his head was finally noticed as he floated out into the deep water, where he sank. The belief is that he must have injured himself in diving. He was home from Butler University, where he had been attending school, to spend his vacation. He was twenty-one years of age and was well known to many in this city.
