WAR OF 1812 DECLARATION FOR PENSION. State of Indiana, County of Blackford, SS: On this 22nd day of April, A. D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy one, personally appeared before me, Richard G. Steele, Clerk of a Court of Record within and for the County and State aforesaid, Bennett Ward aged 74 years, a resident of Hartford City P. O., in the County of Blackford, and State of Indiana, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is married, that his wife's name was Nancy Boggs, to whom he was married near Winchester, Clark Co. KY, on the - - - day of September, 1815, that he served the full period of sixty days in the military service of the United States in the war of 1812, that he is the identical Bennett Ward who was enrolled in Captain Samuel Gooden's Company, of the 16th Regiment, of the - - - Brigade, of the - - - Division, at Montgomery County, in the State of Kentucky, on the - - - day of September, 1814, and was honorably discharged at Walden (?), in Canada, on the - - - day of February or March 1815; that he served as a substitute for Lewis Chatham, a drafted man from Montgomery County, Kentucky, don't remember the precise date of muster, or discharge from the service - His officers in command were Capt Samuel Gooden and Col. Porter - That his discharge has become mislaid and lost, so that he cannot find it.  And that he has received two land warrants for 80 acres each on account of said service, that he at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States, adhered to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them aid or comfort, or exercised any office whatever under any authority or pretended authority, in hostility to the United States and that he will support the Constitution of the United States; that he is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act; that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the Pension Roll of the United States; under the provisions of the act approved February 14, 1871, he hereby appoints with full power of substitution and revocation, John Cantwell of Hartford City, Indiana, his true and lawful attorney, to prosecute his claim and obtain the Pension Certificate which may be issued.  That his postoffice address is Hartford City, County of Blackford and State of Indiana, and his domicile or place of abode is Hartford City, Ind.
