An enterprising town in Boone county on the Indianapolis, Cincinnati & Lafayette
railroad, twenty-six miles from Lafayette and thirty-eight from Indianapolis. It
is surrounded by a rich agricultural country, and large quantities of grain and
produce are shipped from here annually to the eastern markets. It has been
increasing quite fast within the last few years, and now has a population of
1800; there are several fine flouring mills, a woolen mill, with a good
representation of the different trades and professions. The Thorntown academy is
located here, and is one of the many fine educational institutes in the State,
having accomodations for nearly 500 students.
