WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP is the second township east from the northwest corner, and joins the Clinton county line. It contains about 37 square miles. Parts of the township are considerably rolling, while other portions are quite level. Most kinds of grain do well, but many locations are better adapted to grazing and fruit-raising. The bottom lands, though small in quantity are very productive. The township is very well timbered with a durable kind of timber. The main branch of Sugar Creek runs through the northern half of the township. Several other small streams run across it and empty into Sugar Creek. The principal town is Mechanicsburg, located in the northeast corner of the township. The I., C. & L. R. R. runs across the southwestern corner, but Thorntown, in Sugar Creek township, is the principal railroad station for the people of Washington township. The public roads, bridges and school-houses are of a substantial character. The vote of the township is about 425, a majority being Republicans. There are ten school-houses, valued at $3500. B. F. Limpus is the present Township Trustee. SECRET ORGANIZATIONS. Hart Lodge, No. 413, I. O. O. F.; Mechanicsburg; membership, 40; value of property, $300. Mechanicsburg Lodge, No. 325, I. O. G.
