Odell (1916) HON. DAVID TURPIE. David Turpie came to Carroll county with his father's family in the early thirties. His father entered a tract of land in Madison township, where his father and mother lived until their deaths. David Turpie was educated at Kenyon college, Ohio, and started in life teaching school. He chose the profession of law, and entered the law office of Daniel D. Pratt, in Logansport. Mr. Turpie located at Monticello, and entered into active practice; He rose rapidly in his profession, and filled the positions of common pleas and circuit judge. He represented his district several terms in the Legislature, after which he moved to Indianapolis, where he stood at the head of the bar of the state. He was elected United States senator to fill the unexpired term of Jesse D. Bright. He was also United States district attorney under Cleveland's administration. He was elected United States senator two terms, and after a long and faithful public service, he retired to private life and quietly awaited his last call. He died on April 21, 1909, over eighty years old. Hon. David Turpie was a highly-educated man, had a most remarkable memory, and loved to meet the old pioneers of this county, and annually visited his old home. He was classed among the great statesmen of the country. He published a book entitled, "Sketches of My Own Times," which is a monument to his memory. He was survived by a daughter.
