Her death caused genuine sorrow in this community where deceased was loved and respected by all. Susan SMOYER, oldest daughter of David and Esther SMOYER, was born in Carrollton township, Carroll county, Indiana, June 30, 1843. In this county she received her schooling, grew to womanhood, and on May 3, 1866, was united in marriage to Henry D. EIKENBERRY. On a farm near Flora, they shared adversity and prosperity together for 38 years. For the last 14 years they have enjoyed a well deserved life of retirement in their humble home on South Division street in this city. For more than 52 years they enjoyed life together, sharing bravely and hopefully life's tasks. To them were born five daughters, all of whom share with the father the burden of sorrow brought by the death of mother. At the age of 15, she became a member of the Wheeling Presbyterian Church. In October, 1874, the deceased, with her husband, united with the church of the Brethren, and in this faith she lived a beautiful, faithful and consistent Christian life. Her teaching and training the girls in the home was a constant effort to carry out the Gospel injunction, "Nurture Them in the Chastening and Admonition of the Lord." Six years ago, mother EIKENBERRY suffered partial paralysis, from which she never fully recovered. On Sunday night she again suffered a paralytic stroke from which she passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 1918, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 26 days. She is survived by a faithful husband, five daughters, Mrs. Geo. ALBAUGH, Mrs. Orion WAGONER, Mrs. Jacob KINGERY, Mrs. Newton LANDIS, all of Flora; and Mrs. Christian REIFF of Idaville, Ind.; eight grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, two brothers, Fred SMOYER of east of Flora and Wm. SMOYER of Logansport, and two sisters, Mrs. Angeline GARRISON of Darwin, and Miss Sarah SMOYER who makes her home with her brother Fred east of town, and a large circle of other relatives and friends. By her departure the home has lost a loving and faithful wife and mother, the church a helping and devoted member, and the community, one of its most highly respected neighbors and citizens. How well may we say with the poet: Life's Race was well run, Life's work was well done; Life's Crown was well won; Now has come sweet rest. Funeral services were held Sunday morning at eleven o'clock at the Church of the Brethren, Rev. I. R. Beery, officiating. Burial was made in the Moss Cemetery.
