WILLIAM MC DONALD ANSWERS THE FINAL ROLL CALL. William McDONALD, a veteran of the Civil war, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Anna WIRT on Walnut street Wednesday evening at 8:30 o’clock. He has been a helpless invalid for about four years having been stricken with paralysis which grew from partial to total helplessness and for some three years he has been unable to leave his room. One by one these heroes who answered their country’s call in its time of peril, and who returned to their friends after the conflict to be honored for their victory over their foe, meet the enemy, death, which knows no such word as surrender. After all death is not really the victor in a case such as this, life could be no pleasure under the circumstances and would only be a burden to the friends who loved him for what he had been. If there is any one misfortune from which we would be delivered, it is from a helpless old age. While Mr. McDONALD received every attention possible from loving hearts and willing hands, we feel that death was really a blessing and not a victor. Richard William McDONALD was born in Scott county, Kentucky, January 3, 1819. While yet a mere lad his parents removed to Ohio where William received his education, graduating from the Harveysburg college. In 1844 he was united in marriage to Charlotte C. MYERS of Cincinnati and soon after removed to Delphi. To this union three children were born. They are Mrs. Anna WIRT of this place, Mrs. Dr. CROWELL of Monticello, and William McDONALD of Delphi. His wife died in 18[6?]4, later however he was united in marriage to Hannah BOOTH and six children were the result of this union. They are: Henry, Charlie, Beatrice, Walter, Bessie and Martha. Since the death of his second wife which occurred in 18[??] Mr. McDONALD has lived with his daughter Mrs. WIRT of this place. By trade Mr. McDONALD was a manufacturer of paper, and worked at his trade in Logansport, Lafayette, Delphi and other cities until debilitated by old age. The funeral was held at the residence yesterday at 10:30, conducted by Rev. J. W. Stark of the Baptist Church. Interment in Maple Lawn cemetery.
