All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/in/infiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Janet Hall halltall@aol.com May 8, 2007, 4:55 pm Hoosier Democrat, Flora, Ind: Sat 5 Oct 1912 AGED MAN FOUND DEAD IN GARDEN AT HOME YOUNG AMERICA BY A DAUGHTER Elias PLANK, one of the old residents of the Young America community, where he has resided for the past 61 years, was found dead in the garden at his home by his daughter, Miss Janet, last Friday afternoon. When found the body was still warm. A physician was at once summoned but when he arrived upon the scene he pronounced the aged gentleman dead. The coroner of Cass county was at once notified and an inquest held. Deceased, Elias PLANK, son of Abraham and Sarah PLANK, was born December 25, 1824, in Adams county, Pennsylvania. He remained in that state with his parents until he was 22 years of age when he came to Indiana, settling near Lafayette, which was in the year 1847. He only remained a resident of Tippecanoe county for about four years, settling in Cass county in 1851. He located on a farm east of Young America, where he resided until 1903 when he moved to that place that he might lead a more simple and retired life and that he might better enjoy the fruits of his hard labors in years gone by. At the time of his death he was 87 years, 9 months and 2 days of age. In 1839 he was confirmed and became a member of the Evangelical Reform church. He was married to Anna HEINMILLER in 1851. The union was but a short one, the wife dying only a few years later, leaving him with five small children to care for. Two of the children preceded him to the grave. those surviving by the first marriage being John W. PLANK, J. D. PLANK and Mrs. Martha HARNESS, all of the Young America neighborhood. He was remarried in June 1865 to Mrs. Nancy TILBURY, who died one year and nine months ago. To this union was born five children, all of whom survive, as follows: Mrs. Joanna HESS and Mrs. Emma LENON of the Young America neighborhood; Mrs. Laura DeHAVEN of Logansport; Miss Janet, yet at home, and Elias PLANK Jr., who resides on the old Plank homestead east of Young America. Besides the eight children mentioned he also leaves to mourn his death 24 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, three sisters and one brother. The funeral was held at the Young America Baptist church last Sunday, conducted by Rev. J. H. MITCHELL, pastor of the charge. Interment was made in the Center cemetery.
