JEFFERSONVILLE.

A city in Clark county on the Ohio river, at the head of the falls, and nearly
opposite Louisville, Kentucky. It is also the terminus of the Jeffersonville,
Madison & Indianapolis railroad. The shops and offices of the road are located
here. The view from the town, of the river, about a mile wide, the falls,
Louisville and the range of hills on the west for several miles, presents a
varied and beautiful scene scarcely surpassed on the river. The town was
originally laid out by Mr. Jefferson, and resembled a chess board, and only the
alternate squares were to be built, the others reserved for public squares. But
this plan was subsequently altered by authority of the Legislature.
Jeffersonville is the site of the State Prison South, which with its
manufacturing establishments and others of importance, give an air of business
to the place. Being so closely connected with Louisville, its trade is mostly of
a retail character. 
It now has a population of about 6,000.
