CHAPTER XXIII. POPULATION. The population of Clay county at the time of its organization, or at any time within the first five years of its history as a separate subdivision of the state, can not be given. However, beginning with the census of 1830, the figures are given accurately, as believed, for the eight succes- sive censuses from that time down to and including the close of the nineteenth century: For 1830—1,616; for 1840—5,567; for 185o—7,Soo; for 1860— 12,121; for 1870—19,084; for 1880—25,839; for 1890—30,497; for 1900—34,285. The percent or rate of increase for the several intervening periods of ten years is as follows: From 1830 to 1840, 244%; from 1840 to 1850, 40%; from 1850 to i86o, 55%; from i86o to 1870, 57%; from 1870 to 1880, 35%; from i88o to 1890, i8%; from 1890 tt 1900, 12%. The number of inhabitants to the square mile for each of the respective censuses is as follows: For 1830, 4.5 ; for 1840, 15.5 ; for 1850, 21.7; for r86o, 33.7; for 1870, 53; for i8So, 71.8; for ‘890, 84.7; 1900, 95.2.
