CHAPTER XXVIII. MILITARY. Revolutionary and Mexican Soldiers. The surviving soldiers of the Revolutionary war resident in Clay county at the time of the census of 1840 were the following: John Wheeler, Benjamin Wheeler, in Washington township; Lawrence Thompson, Michael Crooks, in Jackson township; John Yocum, Richard Cunningham, in Posey township; David Christie, in Perry township. At a very early day in the history of the county, three Revolutionary soldiers—Benjamin Bell, Obadiah Case and Joseph Case—resided in the northeast part of the cnunty, within the territory of Van Buren township, who had either died or left the county prior to the census of 1840. There are resident in Clay county at this time five surviving soldiers of the Mexican war: Marcus L, West, of Posey township; William Givens and John Lytle, of Sugar Ridge township; and George B. Robinson and Benjamin Adkins, of Harrisou township. A complete list of the names of the officers, commissioned and non- commissioned, and privates, of Company D, Second Indiana Regiment of Volunteers, enlisted in Clay county for the Mexican war in the fall of 1846: John Osborn, captain Squire L.
