384 HISTORY OF CLAY COUNTY Peel, Nelson Sumner and another employe named Callaghan were badly scalded and bruised, the first named dying from the effects of his injures three days later. A magazine explosion at the plant of the United States Powder Company, within a mile of the town of Coalmont, at 7:30 o’clock on the morning of the 17th of March, 1908, resulted in four fatalities. The victims were George Gorby, Alonzo Smith, Crete Simmons and Charles Myers. George Gorby, Jr., and a man named Stewart were also injured, but not fatally.
