BRAZIL.

A growing town, in Clay county, on the Terre Haute & Indianapolis railroad,
fifty-seven miles from Indianapolis and fourteen miles from Bowling Green, the
county seat. It is situated on the western edge of a rich coal bed of about
twenty miles in extent, and in the vicinity of extensive mines of iron ore, said
to be equal to that of Pilot Knob, Missouri. Fire clay and a superior quality of
sand rock, adapted to fhe manufacture of glass, also abound in large quantities.
A large furnace has recently been put in operation here, and two others within a
short distance—one at Knightsville, two miles away, and one at Harmony.
Extensive iron works and other improvements are in contemplation and in course
of erection. The country is well timbered and watered, and is rapidly increasing
in wealth and population.
