G 86 Ind. Vols. 10 Aug.1862 and was discharged 22 Apr 1863 Chronic Hepatitis and Bad Lungs from a cold(flu) He was guarding Mill Creek Bridge near Nashville Tenn. and fell ill. Nathaniel drew a pension from about 1868 to his death in 1919 and it varied from 2$ to 30$ per month with his condition. His right lung was useless and abcessed also his throat was infamed. The heart got worst with age. Many persons who knew him before during and after the war stated he went from a strong man to totally disabled and could do little farm work. Further doctors examined him every five years with the same results.He was 6 ft 2” tall Light Complexion Blue Eyes Brown Hair Weight 150 to 170 Somehow this man lived for 87 years had 11 children Margaret Jane Fish Lowring Filed on Nathaniels pension from his death in 1919 until hers in 1923 for 30$ per month Included in this file is information regarding the disability pension for Margaret’s son-in-law, Samuel N. Smith. Margaret was living with the Smiths after the death of Nathaniel and the Smiths tried to get a pension for her based on his service. Sharlotte Elizabeth Lowring Smith (child no. 9) Married Samuel Smith in 1920 and had one child Samuel was WW1 vet drew pension til Aug 1922 went into Vocational Training in operating Screw Machines in Frankfort Ind. In 1920s Samuel N. Smith WWI Bat.D 325th F.A.21 September 1917 transferred to 236 M.P. Co. 12 Dec. 1918 Discharged 12 July 1919 Hoboken N.J.
