WASHINGTON.

The capital of Daviess county, is situated on the Ohio & Mississippi railroad,
one hundred and seventy-three miles from Cincinnati, and nineteen from
Vincennes. It is a thriving and business place, surrounded by a well cultivated
and rich country. There are some of the richest and best coal mines at
Washington that there are in the State. Large quantities are taken out and
shipped to all parts of the country annually, giving a good business to the
place. It has several churches, excellent graded schools, several manufacturing
establishments, stores, shops, &c. It has been increasing quite fast within the
last few years, and now has a population of about 3,000.
