ELKHART.
An important city of about 2,500 inhabitants, at the divergence of the two
branches of the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad, one hundred miles
from Chicago, and nine miles from Goshen, the county seat. It has five churches,
excellent schools, a number of large manufacturing establishments, with the
usual complement of stores, shops, etc. It supports two weekly newspapers, and
is an enterprising and growing town. The surrounding country is fertile and well
settled by thrifty and intelligent farmers.
