Stump, of Union township, died of lung fever last Saturday morning after a short illness, aged 69 years, 2 months and 15 days. The deceased came to Elkhart county with his father and mother when but a boy of 15 years of age, settling on the now old homestead where he lived for nearly 54 years, and up to the time of his demise. The family came from Canada, accompanied by other relatives. When the family took up their residence in the forest there was not another cabin within three or four miles of them, hence, the subject of this sketch, knew what it was to be a pioneer and share the hardships of frontier life, that were many in those days. The deceased leaves a wife, and eleven children all grown up and married. There are some thirty-six grandchildren and several great grandchildren. The funeral occurred at the Brick church on Monday, near where the interment also took place under the direction of H. F. Eby. The deceased was a much respected citizen, and it was probably one of the largest funeral trains that ever followed the remains of any man to the last resting place in these parts - the vehicles numbering 103.
